WordPress has announced a new Executive Director, but reactions on social media were a bit reserved and surprisingly low.
Automattic CEO and WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg shared the news about the new Executive Director for WordPress.org after the last director’s resignation. While social media reactions were mostly positive, they were also notably quiet, with many comments focusing on the recent WordPress controversy.
New Executive Director
Mullenweg announced that Mary Hubbard has been hired as the new Executive Director. Hubbard was previously the Chief Product Officer for WordPress.com from 2020 and will start her new job on October 21st. She has resigned from her position as Head of Governance and Experience at TikTok Americas.
The Executive Director position at WordPress.org became open after 8.4% of Automattic employees left, including the former Executive Director Josepha Haden Chomphosy. Mullenweg offered employees who wanted to leave $30,000 or the equivalent of six months’ pay, whichever was higher. The severance package was offered after recent problems between Automattic, Mullenweg, and WP Engine (WPE), which led to WPE filing a federal lawsuit against Mullenweg and Automattic, claiming attempted extortion.
